Promising IPL Debutant

The countdown for the Indian Premier League 2023 auction has already begun. The teams are drawing their strategy for the mini-auction by retaining the core players and releasing those who are in surplus for them. Just before the auction, a few senior players and old servants of the franchises retired as well.

On the other hand, few new names have put their names forward for the auction.

Amongst them, there is one player who has all the qualities to be the most promising IPL debutant to look out for in the IPL 2023.

The Indian Premier League auction ahead of the IPL 2023 will be held in Kochi on December 23, 2022. As many as 991 players have registered themselves for the auction. Amongst the 991, 72% of them are Indian players (uncapped and capped), whereas the rest 28% are international players. Amongst the 991 players, Cameron Green stands tall and bright, pulling the attention of the franchises and fans. Cameron Green is one of the three international players who has the hype built around him before the auction and tournament, with Sam Curran and Ben Stokes being the other two.

However, Sam Curran has played for Punjab Kings and Chennai Super Kings in the past, whereas Ben Stokes has played for Rajasthan Royals, which rules them out from the competition for the promising IPL debutant to look out for in the IPL 2023.

Cameron Green has grown in leaps and bounds over the last two years of international and domestic cricket. Green made his senior cricket debut special by picking five wickets for 24 runs while playing for Western Australia. Following the performances, he was picked as a fast bowler but his stress fractures pushed him away from being a bowler.

However, he modified his action to be a batting all-rounder for Australia and the domestic team.Cameron Green remains the most intriguing prospect in world cricket. The 23-year-old well-built all-rounder has flourished in both the red ball and the white ball circuit. Though he does not boast a lot of matches under his belt.

Here’s a look at Cameron Green’s numbers across formats:

Green has featured in 36 games across all formats in the international circuit. In the white ball format, Green boasts a better record compared to his Test records. The Perth-based player has featured in 13 games and has 290 runs to his name at an average of 58 and a strike rate of 90.34, whereas in the T20 format, he has 139 runs at a strike rate of 173.75. The runs in the T20 format have come in this year alone.

Cameron Green made his T20 International debut against Pakistan. The 23-year-old played

a crucial role in restricting Pakistan to a below-par score by picking two wickets in three overs. He conceded just 16 runs in that game.

His initial games did not seal his spot in the Australian line-up but the two innings against India garnered a lot of attention. He scored 61 from 30 balls in Mohali and 52 from 21 balls in Hyderabad. His fifty against India in the third game of the bilateral series was the fastest-fifty by any Australian player in T20Is.

He has picked 5 wickets in T20Is from eight games in the shortest format. As far as ODIs are concerned, the Australian has 11 wickets from 13 games. These wickets have come at an economy of 5.03 and 8.9 in ODIs and T20Is respectively. His bowling numbers, along with his versatility to play across the batting line-up, add to his credibility.

The young all-rounder has impressive numbers in red-ball cricket. He has played 15 Tests for Australia so far and has managed to score 723 runs at an average and a strike rate of 58 and 90.3 respectively.

During the first Test between Australia and West Indies, the two-time World Cup-winning coach, Ricky Ponting asked Andrew McDonald to keep the phone on as he wanted to discuss the future of Cameron Green and his availability for the glamorous and cash-rich event.

The Delhi-based franchise’s head coach is looking forward to signing the player for his team as they have surplus cash to go for the player in the auction. On the air, he said:

“Maybe not here on-air but peep your phone on tonight. I’m really interested to have an IPL conversation with you about Cam Green cos I freed up a fair bit of money for Delhi Capitals this year. I wanna low-down on how much he’s gonna be available. The fans will love him.”

Apart from Delhi Capitals, a lot of other franchises would also be targeting him, namely Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Kolkata Knight Riders to name a few.

The One-Day International World Cup 2023 would be hovering around the corner when the Indian Premier League concludes. Cameron Green’s availability for the team that picks him up will be a key factor in driving his price up or down in the auction.
