Sunrisers Hyderabad replaced Deccan Chargers and started their Indian Premier League journey in 2013. They immediately made an impact and managed to reach playoffs in their inaugural season. Post that, they have remained a force to reckon with and were the champions of the IPL 2016.
However, the big news ahead of the 2023 season is that Brian Lara, the prolific West Indian batter has been made the head coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad. Lara was the strategic advisor and batting coach of the Sunrisers in the 2022 season and has been elevated to the position of head coach as a replacement for Tom Moody.
This will be the first time that Brian Lara will be the head coach of a T20 team and it would be interesting to see how Sunrisers Hyderabad go about their business under his leadership.
Lara would be accompanied by a distinguished support staff which includes Dale Steyn (fast bowling coach), Muttiah Muralitharan (spin bowling coach), and Hemang Badani (fielding coach).
Lara’s elevation could be the result of his impressive work with the batting group of Sunrisers in the last season. Lara has a young team in his hand and this is a great opportunity for youngsters in the SRH setup to learn from him and also for Lara to rebuild this team as one that can deliver some strong performances in the IPL 2023.
Brian Lara was a flamboyant cricketer who did not shy away from playing fearless cricket even when his team was under the pump. Also, for most of his career, Brian Lara showed tremendous fighting spirit almost playing a lone battle for West Indies against some very tough opponents. Brian Lara will surely bring these qualities in his coaching as well and expect SRH to play an aggressive brand of cricket in the IPL 2023.
